Calling it a matter of “life and death” for thousands, Falun Gong practitioners urged Calgarians to take a stance against the Chinese government during a demonstration in Chinatown this morning.

Protesters from Toronto staged a gruesome mock surgery outside the Dragon City Mall, recalling recent allegations of illegal organ harvests in China.

“This is a new form of evil we have yet seen,” said Doris Liu, one of the four Toronto residents traveling across Alberta as part of the Falun Gong National SOS Car Tour.

“We believe thousands and thousands of prisoners have been tortured to death.

“The bloodiest thing is the organ harvest.”

Zhaojin Qiu, a former prisoner from China, said he had been tortured numerous times during his imprisonment from 2000 to 2002.

Though he never saw any of the alleged surgeries, he said he wasn’t surprised when former federal Liberal cabinet minister David Kilgour and human rights lawyer David Matas cited the practice in a recent report, quoting witnesses from China.

Demonstrators hope the 10-day tour will pressure local members of Parliament to publicly condemn the alleged tortures.
